When Robin saw the king's ring, he went down on his knee. «I love no man in the world,» he said, «so well as I love my king. Thank you, Sir Abbot, for your words, and today you must have dinner with me under my greenwood tree.» And he led the king there.

The king saw men working to make food ready (король увидел, как работают люди, чтобы приготовить пищу).

«Are these all your men (кто все эти люди)?» he asked.

Robin sounded his horn three times (Робин протрубил в свой рог три раза), and a hundred young men in Lincoln green came running (и сотня молодых людей в ярко-зеленых костюмах выбежала /из леса/), and stood in lines in front of Robin (и встала рядами перед Робином; in line — в одну линию, в ряд).

«I like this (мне это нравится),» the king thought (подумал король).«He rules his men better than I can rule mine (он правит своими людьми лучше, чем я могу управлять своими; to rule — править, господствовать, властвовать /особ. о монархах/).»

The dinner was soon ready (вскоре обед был готов) — good deer meat (свежее мясо оленя = оленина; good — хороший; неиспорченный, свежий /о еде и т. п./), fine bread (прекрасный хлеб), and good drink (и доброе вино; drink — питье, напиток; алкогольный напиток). The king ate and drank well (король поел и выпил отменно; to eat — есть; to drink — пить; well — хорошо; хорошенько, основательно).

Then very quickly they put up two marks for shooting (затем они очень быстро выставили две мишени для стрельбы; to put up — поднимать; возводить, воздвигать). «The marks are small, and fifty metres away (мишени маленькие, да и расстояние метров пятьдесят),» the king thought (подумал король). «Can they hit them as far away as that (неужели они могут попадать в них с такого расстояния; mark — знак, метка; мишень, цель; to hit — ударять; попадать в цель)?»
