| Ivan Ilyich, who was going on for thirty, had been in love six times: while still a schoolboy in Kazan, he had fallen in love with Marusia Khvoyeva, the daughter of a veterinary surgeon, a mature virgin who had been fruitlessly trapesing the main street of the town in the same plush coat, every day at four o'clock for many years. But Marusia Khvoyeva, who was severely practical, had turned Ivan Ilyich down.
