"Don't run (не бегите)," said Lesperance. "Turn around (повернитесь кругом). Hide in the Machine (спрячьтесь в Машине)."

"Yes." Eckels seemed to be numb (казалось, оцепенел: numb — онемелый, оцепенелый). He looked at his feet as if trying to make them move (он смотрел на свои ноги, как будто пытаясь заставить их двигаться). He gave a grunt of helplessness (он простонал от беспомощности: grunt — ворчанье, мычание).

"Eckels!"

He took a few steps (он сделал несколько шагов), blinking, shuffling (щурясь и шаркая).

"Not that way (не по той дороге)!"

The Tyrant Lizard raised itself. Its armored flesh glittered like a thousand green coins. The coins, crusted with slime, steamed. In the slime, tiny insects wriggled, so that the entire body seemed to twitch and undulate, even while the monster itself did not move. It exhaled. The stink of raw flesh blew down the wilderness.

"Get me out of here," said Eckels. "It was never like this before. I was always sure I'd come through alive. I had good guides, good safaris, and safety. This time, I figured wrong. I've met my match and admit it. This is too much for me to get hold of."

"Don't run," said Lesperance. "Turn around. Hide in the Machine."

"Yes." Eckels seemed to be numb. He looked at his feet as if trying to make them move. He gave a grunt of helplessness.

"Eckels!"

He took a few steps, blinking, shuffling.

"Not that way!"

The Monster, at the first motion (чудовище, при первом движении), lunged forward with a terrible scream (рванулось вперед с ужасным воплем). It covered one hundred yards in six seconds (оно покрыло сто ярдов за шесть секунд). The rifles jerked up and blazed fire (винтовки рванулись вверх и сверкнули огнем). A windstorm from the beast's mouth engulfed them (ураган изо рта чудовища поглотил их /залпы/) in the stench of slime and old blood (в зловонии слизи и старой крови). The Monster roared, teeth glittering with sun (чудовище взревело, зубы блестели на солнце).

Eckels, not looking back (Экельс, не оглядываясь), walked blindly to the edge of the Path (пошел безрассудно к краю Тропы: blind — слепой, blindly — слепо, безрассудно), his gun limp in his arms (его ружье обвисло в его руках: limp — мягкий), stepping off the Path (сходя с Тропы), and walked, not knowing it, in the jungle (и пошел, не зная того, в джунгли). His feet sank into green moss (его ступни погрузились в зеленый мох). His legs moved him (его ноги двигали его), and he felt alone and remote from the events behind (и он почувствовал себя одиноким и удаленным от событий /оставленных/ позади).

The rifles cracked again (ружья выстрелили опять: to crack — трещать, стрелять). Their sound was lost in shriek and lizard thunder (этот звук потерялся в крике /людей/ и в реве ящера: shriek — пронзительный крик, thunder — гром, гул, грохот) . The great level of the reptile's tail swung up (большой хвост рептилии качнулся вверх), lashed sideways (хлестнул в сторону: lash — бич, плеть; to lash — хлестать). Trees exploded in clouds of leaf and branch (деревья взорвались облаками листьев и веток). The Monster twitched its jeweler's hands down to fondle at the men (чудовище резко опустило вниз свои ручки ювелира чтобы приласкать людей), to twist them in half (скрутить их и разорвать пополам), to crush them like berries (раздавить их как ягоды), to cram them into its teeth and its screaming throat (засунуть их в свои зубы и в вопящую глотку: to cram — втискивать, обжираться). Its boulderstone eyes leveled with the men (его глаза, похожие на камни, оказались на уровне людей: boulder — булыжник, to level — уравнивать). They saw themselves mirrored (они увидели свое отражение). They fired at the metallic eyelids and the blazing black iris (они выстрелили в металлические веки и в сверкающую черную радужку: iris — радужная оболочка глаза).
