The sheriff held up his hand to his swordsmen, and they ran to take Robin. But then they stopped. More than a hundred bowmen, with arrows ready, stood out from among the people.
«Don't you remember your promise?» Robin said to the sheriff. «Under my greenwood tree you promised to be my friend.»
Some of the sheriff's men began to run away (некоторые из людей шерифа бросились бежать: «начали убегать прочь»), but some of them stayed (но некоторые из них остались). A fight began (началась схватка).
An arrow hit Little John's knee and wounded him badly (стрела ранила Малыша Джона в колено и нанесла ему сильную рану;
«Please, Robin (пожалуйста, Робин),» he said, «don't let the sheriff take me alive (не дай шерифу взять меня живым). Kill me with your sword, and leave me dead (убей меня своим мечом и оставь меня мертвым).»
«Never (никогда)!» said Robin. And he took the big man on his back (и он взвалил высокого мужчину себе на спину). All the way from Nottingham to the Lee he carried Little John (весь путь от Ноттингема до Ли он нес Малыша Джона).
