crimson [krɪmzn], quartz [kwɔ:ts], tedious [ˈti:dɪəs]
The cliffs rose sheer from the jungle, towering ramparts of stone that glinted jade-blue and dull crimson in the rising sun, and curved away and away to east and west above the waving emerald ocean of fronds and leaves. It looked insurmountable, that giant palisade with its sheer curtains of solid rock in which bits of quartz winked dazzlingly in the sunlight. But the man who was working his tedious way upward was already halfway to the top.
He came from a race of hillmen (он происходил из расы горцев; to come from — происходить из), accustomed to scaling forbidding crags (привыкший взбираться на неприступные скалы), and he was a man of unusual strength and agility (и он был человеком необычайной силы и ловкости). His only garment was a pair of short red silk breeks (его единственным одеянием была пара коротких красных шелковых штанов), and his sandals were slung to his back (а его сандалии были переброшены за спину; to sling — подвешивать /что-л./; вешать через плечо), out of his way, as were his sword and dagger (чтобы не мешать ему, как и его меч и кинжал; out of one’s way — не мешающий кому-л.).
The man was powerfully built, supple as a panther (человек был мощно сложен = мощного телосложения, гибкий как пантера; to build — сооружать, строить). His skin was bronzed by the sun (его кожа загорела на солнце), his square-cut black mane confined by a silver band about his temples (его ровно постриженная черная грива /была/ охвачена серебряным обручем на висках). His iron muscles, quick eyes and sure feet served him well here (его железные мускулы, наблюдательные глаза и уверенные ступни хорошо служили = очень пригодились ему здесь; quick — быстрый; острый, тонкий /о слухе, зрении/; to serve — служить; пригодиться), for it was a climb to test these qualities to the utmost (ибо это было восхождение для проверки этих качеств в высшей степени; to the utmost — в высшей степени, предельно). A hundred and fifty feet below him waved the jungle (в ста пятидесяти футах под ним волновались джунгли). An equal distance above him the rim of the cliffs was etched against the morning sky (на таком же расстоянии над ним кромка утесов отпечаталась на фоне утреннего неба; to etch — гравировать; запечатлевать; оставлять след).
