Sir Richard was working in his castle and on his land, and he didn't need Little John. And Robin Hood laughed when John said: «I’ll be the worst servant the proud sheriff ever had.»

So Little John became the sheriff’s man.

One Wednesday, the sheriff went into Sherwood Forest to shoot deer (однажды в среду шериф отправился в Шервудский лес, чтобы подстрелить оленя; Sherwood Forest — Шервудский лес /старинный королевский лес в графстве Ноттингемшир; с ним связаны легенды о Робине Гуде/). He thought that «Reynold Greenleaf» was with his men (он думал, что "Рейнольд Гринлиф" был с его слугами), but Little John was in bed (но Малыш Джон был = лежал в постели).

After a time, Little John went to the kitchen (спустя некоторое время Малыш Джон отправился на кухню), took some food (взял /себе/ немного еды), and sat down to eat it (и уселся поесть: «чтобы съесть ее»; to sit down — садиться). One Wednesday, the sheriff went into Sherwood Forest to shoot deer. He thought that «Reynold Greenleaf» was with his men, but Little John was in bed.

After a time, Little John went to the kitchen, took some food, and sat down to eat it. The sheriffs cook found him there.

The cook was a strong man, and afraid of nobody (повар был сильным мужчиной и никого не боялся; afraid — испуганный, напуганный, боящийся).

«You take food from my kitchen (ты берешь = посмел взять пищу с моей кухни)!» he shouted (закричал он). «Take that (вот, получи: «возьми вот это»)!» And he hit Little John very hard (и он очень сильно ударил Малыша Джона).

Little John jumped up with his sword (Малыш Джон вскочил на ноги с мечом /в руке/), but the cook took a sword too (но повар тоже схватил меч). They fought for an hour (они сражались в течение часа; to fight).

«You're one of the best swordsmen I ever met (ты один из самых лучших фехтовальщиков, с которым я когда-либо дрался; sword — меч, шпага, рапира; swordsman — фехтовальщик; to meet — встречать; сойтись в схватке /с кем-либо/),» said Little John, breathing hard (сказал Малыш Джон, тяжело дыша; hard — жесткий; сильно, интенсивно; тяжело, с трудом). «If you were as good with a bow (если бы так же хорошо владел луком), you could come to the greenwood with me (ты мог бы отправиться в зеленый лес со мной). Robin Hood would be glad to see you (Робин Гуд был бы рад видеть тебя).»

«Robin Hood?» cried the cook (вскричал повар; to cry — кричать, вопить; восклицать, вскрикнуть). «Reynold Greenleaf, are you Little John (Рейнольд Гринлиф, ты — Малыш Джон)? I've heard of you (я слыхал о тебе). Stop fighting, and we'll be friends (прекратим драться и будем друзьями). I hate the sheriff (я ненавижу шерифа).»
