Stephen King

He Who Walks Behind the Rows.

It began to come into the clearing. Burt saw something huge, bulking up to the sky… something green with terrible red eyes the size of footballs.

Something that smelled like dried cornhusks years in some dark barn.

He began to scream. But he did not scream long.

Some time later, a bloated orange harvest moon came up.

The children of the corn stood in the clearing at midday (в полдень на прогалине стояли дети кукурузы), looking at the two crucified skeletons and the two bodies (глядя на два распятых скелета и два трупа; body— тело; труп). The bodies were not skeletons yet (трупы еще не были скелетами), but they would be (но они станут /ими/). In time (через /некоторое/ время). And here, in the heartlands of Nebraska, in the corn, there was nothing but time (а здесь, на кукурузном поле в самом сердце Небраски не существовало ничего, кроме времени; heartland — центральныйрайон; "сердце"; heart — сердце; land — земля).

“Behold, a dream came to me in the night (слушайте/вот, я видел сон: «сон пришел ко мне» ночью; to behold — /книжн./ увидеть, узреть; /вповелит. наклонении/ смотри!, /вБиблии/ вот, се), and the Lord did shew all this to me (и Господь явил все это мне; shew — архаичноенаписаниеглаголаto show, используетсявБиблиикороля Иакова /King James Bible/).”

They all turned to look at Isaac with dread and wonder (все они повернулись и смотрели: «чтобы смотреть» на Айзека/Исаака со страхом и удивлением), even Malachi (даже Малахия). Isaac was only nine (Исааку было только девять), but he had been the Seer since the corn had taken David a year ago (но он был Провидцем/пророком с тех пор, как кукуруза забрала Давида год назад). David had been nineteen and he had walked into the corn on his birthday (Давиду было девятнадцать и он вошел в кукурузу в свой день рождения), just as dusk had come drifting down the summer rows (как только сумерки начали опускаться на летние ряды /кукурузы/; drift— медленное течение; поток; todrift— относиться, перемещаться /по ветру, течению/).

Now, small face grave under his round-crowned hat, Isaac continued (и вот, с серьезным маленьким личиком под шляпой с круглым верхом, Исаак продолжает):

“And in my dream the Lord was a shadow that walked behind the rows (и в моем сне Господь был тенью, которая обходила ряды), and he spoke to me in the words he used to our older brothers years ago (и он обратился ко мне со словами, которые он использовал /в обращении/ к нашим старшим братьям годы назад). He is much displeased with this sacrifice (он очень недоволен этой жертвой; toplease— радовать, доставлять удовольствие).”
