“Put on a few eggs, there’s a good fellow!” Gandalf called after him, as the hobbit stumped off to the pantries. “And just bring out the cold chicken and pickles!”

“Seems to know as much about the inside of my larders as I do myself!” thought Mr. Baggins, who was feeling positively flummoxed, and was beginning to wonder whether a most wretched adventure had not come right into his house. By the time he had got all the bottles and dishes and knives and forks and glasses and plates and spoons and things piled up on big trays, he was getting very hot, and red in the face, and annoyed.

“Confusticate and bebother these dwarves!” he said aloud. “Why don’t they come and lend a hand?” Lo and behold! there stood Balin and Dwalin at the door of the kitchen, and Fili and Kili behind them, and before he could say knife they had whisked the trays and a couple of small tables into the parlour and set out everything afresh.

Gandalf sat at the head of the party (Гэндальф сел во главе стола: «компании») with the thirteen dwarves all round (с тринадцатью гномами вокруг): and Bilbo sat on a stool at the fireside (и Бильбо сел на скамеечку у камина), nibbling at a biscuit (покусывая без аппетита сухое печенье) (his appetite was quite taken away (его аппетит совершенно пропал); to take away — убирать, уносить), and trying to look (и пытался выглядеть так) as if this was all perfectly ordinary (как будто если бы все было совершенно обыкновенно) and not in the least an adventure (и ни в малейшей мере не напоминало приключение). The dwarves ate and ate (гномы все ели и ели), and talked and talked (и разговаривали и разговаривали), and time got on (и время шло). At last they pushed their chairs back (наконец, они оттолкнули назад свои стулья), and Bilbo made a move (и Бильбо дернулся: «сделал движение») to collect the plates and glasses (чтобы собрать тарелки и стаканы).

“I suppose you will all stay to supper (я полагаю, что вы все останетесь поужинать)?” he said in his politest unpressing tones (сказал он своим наивежливейшим, ненастойчивым тоном).

“Of course (конечно)!” said Thorin. “And after (и после /ужина останемся/). We shan’t get through the business (мы не покончим с этим делом) till late (допоздна), and we must have some music first (и надо бы нам сперва послушать музыку). Now to clear up (а теперь, приведем-ка все в порядок)!” Thereupon the twelve dwarves (вслед за этим все двенадцать гномов) — not Thorin, he was too important (без Торина, он был слишком важен), and stayed talking to Gandalf (и остался разговаривать с Гэндальфом) — jumped to their feet (вскочили на /свои/ ноги) and made tall piles of all the things (и сложили всю посуду: «все вещи» в высокие кучи: «сделали высокие кучи из всех вещей»). Off they went (и они пошли из /гостиной/), not waiting for trays (не дожидаясь подносов), balancing columns of plates (балансируя стопками тарелок; column — колонная, столбик), each with a bottle on the top (на каждой из которых /стопок/ было сверху по бутылке), with one hand (одной рукой), while the hobbit (в то время как хоббит) ran after them (бежал за ними) almost squeaking with fright (почти что повизгивая от испуга): “please be careful (пожалуйста, будьте осторожны)!” and (и) “please, don’t trouble (пожалуйста, не утруждайтесь)! I can manage (я могу справиться и сам). ”
