And when he knew that they were after him, he made himself into a salmon; and when they knew he was a salmon, the sons made eleven otters of themselves, and the Gruagach made himself the twelfth.

When the fisherman’s son found (когда сын рыбака обнаружил; to find /found/ – находить; обнаруживать) that twelve otters were after him (что за ним гонятся двенадцать выдр), he was weak with hunger (он был слаб от голода), and when they had come near (и когда они приблизились: «подошли ближе»), he made himself a whale (он превратился в кита: «сделал себя китом»). But the eleven brothers and their father (а одиннадцать братьев и их отец) made twelve cannon whales of themselves (превратились в двенадцать огромных китов: «сделали двенадцать пушечных китов из самих себя»; cannon – пушка), for they had all gone out of the river (потому что они все /уже/ выплыли: «вышли» из реки), and were in the sea now (и теперь были в море).

When they were coming near him (когда они приближались: «подходили ближе» к нему), the fisherman’s son was weak from pursuit and hunger (сын рыбака был слабым от преследования и голода), so he jumped up out of the water (поэтому он выпрыгнул из воды), and made a swallow of himself (и превратился в ласточку: «сделал ласточку из себя самого»); but the Gruagach and his sons became twelve hawks (а Груагах и его сыновья стали двенадцатью ястребами; to become /became, become/), and chased the swallow through the air (и стали преследовать ласточку по небу: «по воздуху»; through – через, сквозь; /движение в какой-л. среде./ по); and as they whirled round and darted (и пока они кружились и бросались /на ласточку/; dart – стрела, дротик; рывок, бросок, стремительное движение; to dart – метать; устремляться, мчаться, бросаться), they pressed him hard (они упорно теснили его; to press – жить, нажимать; теснить, оказывать давление, упорно преследовать), till all of them came near the castle of the king of Erin (пока все они не приблизились к замку короля Ирландии).
