Эту опасность ясно понимали и другие: Селевк и Птолемей тщательно организовали престолонаследие, задолго до своей смерти Антигон Одноглазый назначил своего сына царем, как только принял этот титул сам, и Антигон Гонат естественным образом стал царем после смерти своего отца. Династическая катастрофа Лисимаха была наглядным примером для всех. Проблема заключалась в македонцах. Кассандр пытался назначить преемника, но вмешалась его вдова. Те македонцы, которыми правил Кассандр, не бывали за морем, были сторонниками традиций и не любили новшеств. Только пережитое ими нашествие галатов — еще один процесс очищения — наконец заставил их отказаться от своего снисходительного отношения к спорам по вопросу престолонаследия. Тем временем они из-за своего эгоцентризма и упрямства фактически разрушили собственную империю.
