The houses of the Munchkins were odd-looking dwellings, for each was round, with a big dome for a roof. All were painted blue, for in this country of the East blue was the favorite color.
Toward evening, when Dorothy was tired with her long walk (/ближе/ к вечеру, когда Дороти устала от своего долгого путешествия; toward — зд. указывает на приближение к определенному моменту времени: к, около; tired — усталый, уставший) and began to wonder where she should pass the night (и начала задаваться вопросом, где ей провести ночь), she came to a house rather larger than the rest (она подошла к одному дому, который был несколько больше, чем остальные; rather — до некоторой степени, слегка, несколько, пожалуй). On the green lawn before it (на зеленой лужайке перед ним) many men and women were dancing (танцевали много мужчин и женщин). Five little fiddlers played as loudly as possible (пять маленьких скрипачей играли так громко, как это /было/ возможно; fiddle — скрипка; fiddler — скрипач /особ. уличный/), and the people were laughing and singing (а люди смеялись и пели), while a big table near by was loaded with delicious fruits and nuts (тогда как огромный стол поблизости был завален вкусными плодами и орехами; to load — грузить, нагружать), pies and cakes (пирогами и кексами), and many other good things to eat (и множеством других вкусностей: «вкусных вещей, /которые можно было/ съесть»; good — хороший; свежий, доброкачественный).
The people greeted Dorothy kindly (люди сердечно приветствовали Дороти), and invited her to supper and to pass the night with them (и пригласили ее поужинать /с ними/ и остаться у них на ночь; to pass — идти, проходить; проводить, коротать /время и т. п./); for this was the home of one of the richest Munchkins in the land (так как это был дом одного из самых богатых Манчкинов в стране), and his friends were gathered with him to celebrate their freedom from the bondage of the Wicked Witch (и его друзья собрались у него, чтобы отпраздновать свое освобождение из рабства Злой Ведьмы).
