Карли, что некоторый всплеск строительной активности в Италии в VIII в. связан с иммиграцией сюда из Византии ремесленников — противников иконоборчества (см.: Carli F. Op. cit. P. 193-194). Иммиграция могла начаться и раньше, вследствие репрессий Юстиниана II (685-695; 705-711). В этом смысле показательно, что мозаики начала VIII в. в молельне папы Иоанна VII в Риме действительно выполнены византийскими мастерами. См.: Nordhagen /.
